What Is C4 Sugar Testing?

Plants capture carbon in different ways. Most flowering plants that bees visit are known as C3 plants, while plants such as sugarcane and maize are C4 plants.

What does the test measure? C4 sugar testing, often done using a method called SCIRA (Stable Carbon Isotope Ratio Analysis), estimates the proportion of sugars in a honey sample that come from C4 plant sources.

Why is it used? It is one of the laboratory tools used in honey quality analysis. Food standards specify limits for C4 sugar content in honey.
